The term roadster has become increasingly muddied of late due to the popularity of naked bikes. Where there used to be a clear definition between sports and naked bikes, now the boundaries have become blurred. There are sports nakeds such as the Aprilia Tuono, retro bikes such as the Yamaha XJR, classic-styled modern bikes such as the Triumph Bonneville and plain old nakeds like the Ducati Monster. So where does that leave roadsters?

Roadsters are generally regarded as good looking naked bikes that don’t shout about their sporting side. Where some naked bikes have aggressive riding positions, roadsters are relaxed in their stance with an engine that is tuned for mid-range grunt rather than outright performance. You don’t rush about on a roadster, you sit back and enjoy the ride on a good-looking bike that is built to allow a pillion to share the experience.

Bikes such as the BMW R1200R or Yamaha MT-01 are roadsters and arguably the Ducati Diavel could also be classed as a roadster, although some would say the Monster is more this style of machine. You don’t have to have acres of chrome to qualify as a roadster, it’s more an attitude than a look, although often roadsters are also fine looking bikes!

The benefits of a roadster

Naked bikes are starting to become as much about power and performance as sports bikes, something that roadster buyers aren’t so bothered about. A roadster is far more comfortable to cruise around on, enjoying the sensation of two wheels without feeling the need to rush into every corner flat out.

As the engines are tuned for mid-range you don’t have to tap dance on the gear lever every second, and pillions appreciate the roomy and generally deeply padded seats.
