2017 Yamaha YZF-R6

Yamaha have announced the specification and price of its much anticipated supersport challenger, the YZF-R6.

The £10,999 R6 is going to be hitting the dealers in April 2017. Yamaha are hoping the bike will be the savior of the 600cc sportsbike class which has seen dwindling sales lately -to the point where Honda have pulled out of the supersport class altogether.

Yamaha’s new R6 features a host of updates over the outgoing model including a traction control system (TCS) with six levels of intervention. The TCS is also designed to be less intrusive and includes a system that compensates for tyre wear to give consistent performance.

Suspension is provided by 43mm KYB forks which are a hand-me-down from the bigger 2016 YZF-R1. The forks are fully adjustable, allowing the rider to tailor the settings to his or her needs. Braking is taken care of by dual 320mm discs with 4 pot calipers and ABS.

The bikes styling is as razor sharp as ever with LED headlights set in the fairing and a front air intake that is pure MotoGP bike. The racing theme extends to the design of the whole of the fairing. Yamaha state the bike is 8% more aerodynamically efficient than the old R6 - helped also by indicators mounted in the rear view mirrors.

The bike includes a quickshifter as standard and Yamaha’s own variable intake technology (YCC-I) which it first debuted on the YZF-R1 in 2007. The top-spec-tech doesn’t stop there with Yamaha using a ride by wire throttle. Said to be directly descended from the Yamaha YZR-M1 MotoGP bike. The system along with the YCC-I and the bikes ECU should mean the the R6 delivers its power in a smoother and more controlled manner.

The 2017 YZF-R6 features an aluminium fuel tank to further enhance responsiveness and a fully magnesium subframe. This not only makes the bike as light as it can be but also allows the subframe and tank to be slimmer, enhancing rider mobility.

The 2017 Yamaha YZF-R6 is available in Tech Black and Race Blu. For more information please click here.
