BMW refreshes R1200 range, available this August

Following hot on the tail of news the F700 GS and F800 GS models would receive a facelift for the 2017 model year, BMW are also reporting technical upgrades to the R1200 range including the R1200 R roadster, the half-faired R1200 RS, the big touring R1200 RT and of course the mega-seller itself, the off-road R1200 GS and GS Adventure.

BMW are also bringing back the GS Adventure “Triple Black” special edition.

The law states that all new motorcycles from 1st January 2017 onwards must comply with EU4 regulations controlling emissions and also safety so BMW have made the supplementary technical changes to their liquid-cooled boxer engine, made enhancements to the gearboxes on each model as well as adding sidelights but have said they will not compromise sound or performance.

Here’s Markus Kemper, BMW Motorrad Product Manager, to explain the changes:

BMW R 1200 GS

In addition to the technical changes, the instrument panel has been redesigned a new crash bar that allows cylinder protection covers to be mounted appears in the optional accessories range.

BMW R 1200 GS Adventure

The same amends as the GS model but as of model year 2017, the colour Ocean Blue metallic matt is no longer available.

The ‘Triple Black’ name has been used on previous BMW models and refers in this instance to a special travel endure version of the BMW R 1200 GS.

The virtually all-black finish includes a central fuel tank cover, storage compartment lid and front mudguard in Blackstorm metallic together with fuel tank side panels in Dark Slate metallic. The front and rear frame in finished in Agate Grey in combination with the black engine, gearbox and swinging arm. A new black seat embossed with the ‘GS’ name.

BMW R 1200 RT

As well as engine and gearbox refinements, the R1200 RT has new paint finishes with Carbon Black Metallic and Alpine White replacing Ebony metallic and San Marino Blue metallic. Platinum Bronze metallic remains.

Optional equipment features extend to include the banking-optimised ABS Pro and the dynamic brake light (both in conjunction with the Riding Modes Pro option).

BMW R 1200 R

Just like the R1200RT, optional equipment includes the banking-optimised ABS Pro and the dynamic brake light (both in conjunction with the Riding Modes Pro option) as well as the standard engine and gearbox upgrades.

Meanwhile, in the colour range, Racing Red is new as is a special R 1200 R Sport paint scheme combining a new frame colour and a Light White with Cordoba Blue which actually replaces the two separate paint finishes by the same name.

BMW R 1200 RS

As with the R1200 R and RT, the RS also features the same engine and gearbox amends and optional bank-optimised ABS Pro and dynamic brake light (with Riding Mode Pro) plus a new paint style of Light White metallic / Magelland Grey metallic mat which replaces Granite metallic matt.

All of these models are set to appear in dealers from August.
